THE SKIRR are a lively, guitar-led indie-rock and garage-pop band from Stoke on Trent. Formed in 2012, the quartet is comprised of Chris Whyte (guitar, vocals), Gus Nicol (bass guitar, vocals), Ben Davies (guitar, backing vocals), and Adam Hawkins (drums).
The Skirr have a talent for writing melodic pop-rock and punk tunes with catchy lyrics, vocal harmonies, and memorable guitar riffs. Chris Whyte said, “Having four songwriters in the band and a variety of different influences means our music is entertaining and unpredictable. Our show starts off with Weezer, then transforms into Mumford & Sons and then ends with The Beatles, but all songs are still very much The Skirr.”
The Skirr have made a small but significant impact on the local live scene in the Midlands. They have performed at numerous venues including The Sunflower Lounge, The Victoria, The Flapper and The Actress and Bishop in Birmingham. In June 2013, the band played their first headline gig to an audience of 200+ at The Slade Rooms in Wolverhampton supported by Luke Wylde and the Japes.
The band regularly take part in charity events such as Oxjam Lichfield and BandAge for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. They have also entered a number of battle of the band events including Kerrang! Radio’s Battle of the Musicians 2012 in Hednesford. The Skirr were awarded the top prize at Battle of the Bands events at Staffordshire University in 2012 and at The Rigger in Stoke-on-Trent in 2014.
The Skirr released their debut single – ‘Steal The Sun’ – in 2013 and have received airplay on BBC WM Introducing as well as a number of local and internet radio stations. Steal The Sun features on the band’s debut EP ‘Bolt from the Blue’ alongside tracks such as ‘Little Sister’ and ‘Sunday After Dinner’. The single and EP was produced by Richard Wood and recorded at The Old Smithy (Robert Plant, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest).
